JabberD Quickstart README Version: 0.1 Date: 2003-01-24 Author: Peter Saint-Andre INTRODUCTION The JabberD Quickstart package enables you to easily install, configure, and manage a Jabber server for use on a private intranet or the public Internet. CHOOSING THE RIGHT PACKAGE First, make sure that you download the correct package for your machine's specific operating system. There are packages for the following platforms: - Linux - BSD - Solaris SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS In addition to the normal C libraries found on any Unix or Unix-like operating system, make sure that your machine contains the "dialog" program: http://dickey.his.com/dialog/dialog.html This usually comes standard on most Unix systems, but it is possible you will need to install it. FILE PATH / LOCATION The JabberD Quickstart package is installed and run in the directory where you unpack it. Make sure you put it in your desired directory before configuring the server. FILES INCLUDED There are only three files included in the package: 1. jabberd -- a binary version of the server program 2. README -- this help file 3. setup.sh -- the server setup script Any other files and directories need to run JabberD are created by the setup.sh script as described below. USING JABBERD QUICKSTART To use JabberD Quickstart, all you have to do is run the setup.sh program by typing './setup.sh'. The script will present you with a series of options. Start by selecting the "Generate Configuration" option. After you answer the questions, the script will create the following files and directories: 1. jabber.xml -- the server configuration file 2. spool/serverhostname/ -- a directory that will contain the user.xml files for each account created on your Jabber server, where "serverhostname" is the domain name you supplied for your Jabber server 3. spool/serverhostname/admin.xml -- the user.xml file for the server administrator, where "admin" is the username you supplied for the admin After you generate a configuration, you may then select the the "Start the Server" option to immediately run your server and join the Jabber network. You may also select the "User Administration" option to enable/disable public user registration and add/remove users. Make sure to stop the server before adding or removing users, since the server caches account information and changes you make while the server is running may not take effect.
